Obeidat Law has represented and continues to represent a number of major international and local clients in disputes before Jordanian courts or arbitral tribunals, as well as acts as co-counsel on foreign actions and arbitrations involving Jordanian and non-Jordanian clients.

Our experience in litigating and arbitrating civil and commercial claims as well as certain white-collar criminal complaints covers a variety of areas.  Obeidat Law’s expertise extends to defending intellectual property rights on behalf of some of the world’s major brand owners.

  • Represented the Ministry of Public Works & Housing in an arbitration proceeding under ICC Rules governed by Jordanian laws in a $13,000,000 dispute with a contractor for a project financed by USAID;
  • Represented a major Turkish conglomerate involved in a BOOT water project in Jordan (wherein the client acted as contractor and operator) in an ICC arbitration proceeding against the Jordanian government in relation to a dispute under the Jordanian Civil Code;
  • Represented a large real estate developer based in Jordan in a $15,000,000 arbitration claim against a contractor over a construction dispute;
  • Acted as co-counsel with an international law firm on behalf of a major Jordanian fertilizer company in relation to disputes with the contractor and engineering company that implemented the construction of the client’s plants in Jordan. The project documents are mainly English law governed.  Our efforts were focused on gathering the necessary documents and facts to launch arbitration proceedings under LCIA rules in London;
  • Represented a major Arab mining company in a shareholder dispute with a joint venture partner over the interpretation of an article in the parties’ agreement, which dispute was brought to arbitration before the ICC for a value of approximately $11 million;
  • Represented a Jordanian-based construction company with operations in several countries including the GCC in a Cairo-seated international arbitration against the owner of a manufacturing plant over a $53 million claim;
  • Defended a Jordanian public shareholding company in an arbitration proceeding brought against it under UNCITRAL rules by a strategic investor in the same company claiming damages in the neighborhood of $2.8 million for breach of contract. The proceedings also involved certain counterclaims brought by our client;
  • Defended a joint venture formed by a Dutch company and a Jordanian company against a claim brought against it under ICC rules by a Jordanian fertilizer manufacturer over a contract for the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of a manufacturing plant in which the claimant was alleging in excess of $1 million in damages;
  • Represented a major Lebanese engineering company in a Jordanian Arbitration Law proceeding against a major real estate development company in Jordan in which the parties had several cross-claims that totaled more than $40 million;
  • Represented a major Jordanian advertising company in a Jordanian Arbitration Law proceeding against the Greater Amman Municipality;
  • Some of the firm’s partners have regularly acted as party-nominated arbitrators or sole arbitrators in disputes involving public and private clients, including the Ministry of Public Works & Housing, construction companies, and others.
  • Represented a major international beverage and soft drink bottler in a multi-million-dollar shareholder dispute with local partners in Jordanian courts. Our efforts on behalf of the client covered 5 court cases that were ongoing at the same time and resulted in a purchase by the client of the other shareholders’ interests subsequent to our successes in winning the court cases filed by or against the client;
  • Represented a global bank with extensive presence in the Middle East in several claims (some of which were successfully won or settled) estimated at around $60 million against a Jordanian-based group of companies;
  • Represented a major Arab-based mobile telecom company in a multi-million-dollar tax dispute with the Jordanian Income Tax Department, and managed to reduce the total liability of the client substantially;
  • Represented a major UAE-based bank in a claim against a well-known GCC-based conglomerate over a default on a facility that exceeds $100 million by successfully laying an attachment on the assets of certain shareholders of the conglomerate located in Jordan in support of the original action filed in the UAE;
  • Represented a leading Jordanian bank in several court actions that included claims and counter claims against an investment company with operations in Jordan and other Arab countries over certain debt facilities in the approximate amount of $57 million;
  • Represented a global bank with extensive presence in the Middle East in connection with several claims against a number of defaulting customers with values ranging between $7.5 million and $20 million, mainly as a result of the ramifications of the international financial crisis;
  • Represented a GCC-based telecom company with operations in Jordan in an action brought in the High Court of Justice against the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Jordan and a local telecom company over certain decisions by the regulator at the request of the local company that prejudiced the client’s position;
  • Acted as co-counsel for the Jordanian government, the Central Bank of Jordan and other major entities and individuals in US, UK, Hong Kong and other courts. Our role involved providing Jordanian law advice and expert opinions to international law firms acting on behalf of the clients;
  • Our firm also acted in concert with international law firms in the UK, USA and other countries in relation to foreign litigation wherein our role was to support the international firm and provide Jordanian legal opinions, expert witness statements or to file ancillary legal proceedings in Jordan;
  • Represented a number of international clients in intellectual property-related court actions against local manufacturers or businesses, including certain search and seizure applications and confiscation of goods, etc.
